Lesson 102 · German A1-2

Navigating Automated Phone Menus

Automatische Telefonansagen

Calling a bank, insurance provider, or government hotline in Germany often means navigating an automated menu first - a genuinely different listening skill from a live conversation: fast, formulaic, and unforgiving if you miss the option you need.

Today's win: understand the fixed phrases automated phone systems use and respond to them correctly.

Standard opening phrases

Herzlich willkommen bei ... (Welcome to ...)
Für Deutsch drücken Sie die 1. (For German, press 1. - imperative, Lesson 25)
Bitte wählen Sie eine der folgenden Optionen. (Please choose one of the following options.)

Menu options: numbers you'll hear

Für [Thema], drücken Sie die [Zahl]. (For [topic], press [number] - the core repeating pattern)
Um mit einem Mitarbeiter zu sprechen, drücken Sie die 0. (To speak with a staff member, press 0 - genuinely the most useful number to remember.)

If you're ever lost in a menu, pressing 0 is the near-universal shortcut to reach a human - worth remembering even before you understand the rest of the menu.

Waiting and hold phrases

Bitte haben Sie einen Moment Geduld. (Please be patient for a moment.)
Alle Mitarbeiter sind derzeit im Gespräch. (All staff are currently on a call.)
Ihr Anruf wird gleich entgegengenommen. (Your call will be answered shortly.)
Try it out loud: imagine calling a bank hotline - listen for (or imagine) the number to press for "Konto" and rehearse pressing 0 as your fallback.
