Schreiben, dann abhaken, dann erst das Muster

Writing cannot be marked by a script, so this does the next best thing: every prompt comes with the checklist an examiner actually works through - greeting, register, each content point, word count, the one grammar feature the task is testing. You write, you tick honestly, and only then does the model answer unfold. The word counter runs live, because length is a marking criterion in both directions.

The order that works

  1. Set a timer before you start. A1 message: 10 minutes. A2 email: 20. B1 email or forum post: 20-25. The exam gives you no more, and writing untimed teaches you the wrong pace.
  2. Write without looking anything up. A word you cannot retrieve under time is a word you do not have yet - note it afterwards, do not fetch it now.
  3. Tick the checklist against what is on the page, not against what you meant. "Greeting present" means the greeting is there, spelled right, with the comma.
  4. Then open the model. Do not compare style - compare structure. Count its sentences per content point.
  5. Rewrite once, the next day. The second draft from memory is where the phrases actually stick.

What costs the most marks

MistakeWhy it is expensive
A missing content pointScored separately from language. Perfect German that answers two of three points loses more than clumsy German that answers all three.
Mixed registerOne du in a Sie letter, or Liebe Grüße on an application, reads as not knowing the difference.
OverwritingGoing far past the word target costs time and adds errors. At A1 the target is 30 words, not "at least 30".
Verb position after deshalb / trotzdemThe single most common B1 slip: these take position 1, so the verb comes immediately after.
