Many German verbs pair with a fixed preposition, and that pairing locks in a specific case (Akkusativ or Dativ) that does not change. These cannot be derived from meaning - they must be memorized as a unit, verb + preposition + case, the same way English fixes "wait for" rather than "wait on." Introduced in Lessons 185-186.

To avoid repeating a noun already mentioned, replace "preposition + noun" with a single da(r)- word. Use dar- before a preposition starting with a vowel (darauf, daran, darüber), and plain da- otherwise (dafür, damit, davon). This only works for things, not people - for people, keep using preposition + pronoun (mit ihm, an sie).
