German uses the passive to focus on an action rather than who performs it - common in official notices, instructions, and process descriptions. Built from werden (conjugated) plus the Partizip II at the end of the sentence.
| ich werde geöffnet | I am opened |
| du wirst geöffnet | you are opened |
| er/sie/es wird geöffnet | he/she/it is opened |
| wir werden geöffnet | we are opened |
| ihr werdet geöffnet | you (plural) are opened |
| sie/Sie werden geöffnet | they/you are opened |
| ich wurde geöffnet | I was opened |
| du wurdest geöffnet | you were opened |
| er/sie/es wurde geöffnet | he/she/it was opened |
| wir wurden geöffnet | we were opened |
| ihr wurdet geöffnet | you (plural) were opened |
| sie/Sie wurden geöffnet | they/you were opened |
Add von + dative to name who performed the action. Often left out entirely - that is the point of choosing the passive.
Die Tür wird von dem Mitarbeiter geöffnet. (The door is opened by the employee.)
| Active | Passive |
|---|---|
| Der Mitarbeiter öffnet die Tür. | Die Tür wird (von dem Mitarbeiter) geöffnet. |
| Man spricht hier Deutsch. | Hier wird Deutsch gesprochen. |
