Lesson 169 · German B1

Konjunktiv II: Hypotheticals & Polite Wishes

Der Konjunktiv II

You already use one Konjunktiv II form without knowing it: möchte (Lesson 11) is the Konjunktiv II of mögen. This lesson extends that pattern to the rest of German - the form used for "would," "could," "would have," and extra-polite requests.

Today's win: say what you would do in a hypothetical situation, and make a request sound more polite.

würde + infinitive: the all-purpose "would"

For almost any verb, German builds "would do something" with würde plus the infinitive at the end of the sentence - the same verb-to-the-end pattern as modal verbs (Lesson 11).

ich würdeI would
du würdestyou would
er/sie/es würdehe/she/it would
wir würdenwe would
Sie würdenyou would (formal)
Ich würde mehr Deutsch sprechen. (I would speak more German.)

Quick check: "I would speak more German" - Ich ______ mehr Deutsch sprechen.

würde

The high-frequency irregulars: hätte, wäre, könnte, müsste

A few verbs are so common that German uses their own Konjunktiv II form instead of würde + infinitive.

Verbich-formMeaning
habenhättewould have
seinwärewould be
könnenkönntecould
müssenmüsstewould have to
Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. (I would like to have a coffee - a more polite version of möchte.)
Das wäre toll! (That would be great!)

Quick check: which word means "would have," used to make a request extra polite (Ich ______ gern...)?

hätte

Hypothetical statements: wenn + Konjunktiv II

This is where "would" sentences pay off most: describing a situation that is not real, and what would follow from it.

Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich nach Berlin fahren. (If I had time, I would go to Berlin.)
Wenn ich das wüsste, würde ich es dir sagen. (If I knew that, I would tell you.)

Notice both halves of the sentence use Konjunktiv II, and the verb goes to the end in each clause - the same subordinate-clause pattern you already know from wenn (Lesson: subordinate clauses with weil/dass/wenn).

Quick check: in "Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich fahren," which clause carries "würde"?

the main clause (the result: "würde ich fahren")

Extra-polite requests

Könnten Sie... (could you...) softens a request even further than können alone - useful for formal emails, asking strangers for help, or official calls.

Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? (Could you please help me?)
Hätten Sie einen Moment Zeit? (Would you have a moment?)
Try it out loud: say one hypothetical sentence about your move to Germany - "Wenn ich in Deutschland wäre, würde ich..." and finish it.
