Schilder, Anzeigen, Nachrichten - und Amtsdeutsch
Reading is the skill where a technique beats vocabulary. Every item here is one short text with one question, drawn from what actually reaches you: notices, ads, messages, newspaper paragraphs, opinions, house rules - and a set of amtliche Briefe, real official-letter German, which no course teaches and which decides whether you notice the deadline in your own post.
The four moves that win reading points
- Question first, text second. You are looking something up, not translating. Knowing what you need changes what you see.
- Find the word that decides. Almost every item turns on one: nicht … sondern, erst, nur, allerdings, ausdrücklich, mindestens, beiderseits. Circle it before you answer.
- Check every attribute in ad matching. The wrong ad is always the one that fits on three points and fails on the fourth - the day, the age, the language, the price.
- In opinions, read to the end. German opinion texts concede first and disagree after aber. What follows aber is the position.
Why Amtsdeutsch is in here
It is not on the A1 or A2 syllabus and only partly on B1 - but it is the German that costs money when you misread it. A handful of recurring patterns carry most official letters:
- Andernfalls … - what happens if you do nothing. Usually the most important sentence in the letter.
- innerhalb von … nach Zugang - the clock starts when it arrives, not when it is dated.
- Widerspruch einlegen - you can object, and there is a window. Nearly every Bescheid ends with this paragraph.
- Wir behalten uns vor … - a threat, not an action already taken.
- vorläufig, nach Aktenlage, maßgeblich ist … - the figure can change, they will decide without your papers, and this is the date that counts.
